Happy Hour

I suggest a ratings happy hour. Alloted times during the day when rating points go up 200% of the typical value. Rating Decreases would be 50% of the norm. This would allow for more to get to the higher ratings to create more competition.

winning games would allow you to get a higher rating

kinda missing the point lanky

Lanky is not missing the point. As much of a dolt as he usually is, he's right about this one.

Rating should not be tampered with. The whole point of keeping the system of rating intact is because it represents an objective way of measuring skill. It is not a perfect means of doing that - but it is the only way we have to distinguish a decent player from a bad player.

Providing rating boosts to players who play during certain hours distorts the meaning of rating, similar to the way printing lots of new money distorts the value of old money. It creates inflation, and over time the price level just rises to meet aggregate supply. In other words, if you start giving out free rating boosts on a daily basis, the overall water level will rise, and the average rating level on the site will simply increase to match it.

You said you wanted to create more competition. By itself, I think that's a waste of time. I want to create better competition.

The only way to do that is to teach new players how to play the game the right way, and to hunt down teamers, exclude suiciders, and keep out players who don't want to improve and learn. If the overall quality of the game improves, the overall quality of the site will improve. More players will be attracted to the game, more players will become members, and the site will become more viable.

Rating is the only way of weeding out bad players. It's not perfect - there are plenty of bad players with reasonably high ratings, and many decent players with multiple nicks with average ratings. But to get a truly high rating and sustain it over time, you have to be at least halfway decent. Partly because you need to win some games, and partly because high rated players won't play with noobs on their higher accounts. Either way, rating has to remain meaningful.

This is all philosophical anyway; making the kind of adjustment you suggest requires programming; it is not something the admins can administer. I think it is a great thing to have suggestions on the board. But I think we need to focus on suggestions that can be implemented with what we have, instead of asking for programming changes which are highly unlikely to come to pass. If we want to improve this site, we need to do it ourselves, without any help.

Very good point Brent. Just figured I'd toss the idea out there.

I actually think its a great idea. Anything to create more competition is a good thing, if it encourages alot of top players to play regular at certain times i am well up for it.

give it a shot, what harm can it do ?

"What harm can it do"

Paragraphs 2 and 3 of my previous response.

I understand ur point pole, but at the same time ppl with higher ratings will tend to improve their game as they dont want to lose that nic. dont know about you but i would be more worried about playing a 1400 nic than a 1800 nic, as a 1400 nic will have no problems about suiciding you.

What i mean about "what harm can it do" is trial it and see what response we get. besides if it doesnt encourage other players to understand the game better than atleast it will encourage most of us top players to play at the same time which is the only real obstacle keeping us from decent games, there is enough of us to play, but were on at different times. Which is basiclly my point read again brent.
